Since the beginning of this year, China’s international route network has been continuously improved. According to the data from the Civil Aviation Administration of China, as of now, the number of countries with which China has direct flights has reached 79. The weekly average number of international passenger flights operated by Chinese and foreign airlines has reached 6,428, a 25.4% increase compared with the same period last year. The share of flight volume between China and the countries along the Belt and Road Initiative has also steadily increased, currently accounting for about 72%.
The continuous expansion of international routes has provided more convenient travel options for people from all over the world. Coupled with the favorable immigration policies, China’s inbound tourism has witnessed explosive growth. Shanghai, as a popular inbound tourism destination in China, has received more than 1.8 million inbound foreign tourists this year, a 48% increase compared with the same period last year. Many foreign tourists are attracted by China’s rich culture and historical heritage.
In addition to the major airports in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, the international routes of some regional airports have also been increasing. This has made more cities with regional airports popular among international tourists and has further boosted local tourism revenue. For example, in March, Dali Airport opened a direct flight route to Ho Chi Minh City, and in April, Huangshan Airport opened a direct flight route to Busan, South Korea.
The increase in international tourists has also changed their travel patterns. More and more foreign tourists are choosing to have in – depth tours in China, rather than just passing through. In Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, many overseas tourists are staying in local homestays and enjoying the local cuisine and culture. The number of international passengers at Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport has reached 152,000 this year, a 7.64% increase compared with the same period last year.
The booming inbound tourism in China not only promotes the development of the tourism industry but also enhances cultural exchanges between China and the world. It allows more people around the world to understand and experience the charm of China, and at the same time, it also provides opportunities for China to show its cultural and historical heritage to the world.
